Jesus said, 'Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven, For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.'
Some years ago I walked into a friend's house to discover them looking after their two children. Well there's nothing strange about that, you say! But in their case they were over 6,000 miles away from the children who were doing their homework in the living room in Peru, while my friend was in his kitchen in England. The parents were working in two different countries at the time, and when Mum had to go into the kitchen to cook, Dad would keep an eye on the children in the living room and help them with their homework. It was their custom to keep Skype on the computer all day, and talk to each other as though they were in the same room, and I can remember feeling dizzy as the camera was periodically moved to another room.
Jesus says that 'where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them'. So is it like having a camera and monitor in the corner of the room, with Jesus watching on? Well, not quite, though there are some similarities. But when Christians gather together in worship and in prayer, Jesus promises to be with them. The passage above, comes after Jesus talks about Church discipline and how to resolve issues together, and the emphasis is on Christians agreeing and being of one mind. When this happens, Jesus says, God will listen to our prayer.
In the middle of a pandemic it may still be difficult to physically come together everywhere, but nevertheless we can still use the internet to come together, and be of one mind about issues that concern us. God will listen to our petitions, and answer in the best way possible for us.
Lord Jesus,
help us to remember
that You are with us
when we come together in prayer
and that You will listen to our requests
when we are of one mind.
Amen.
