High Priest Atonement Hebrews 2 Jesus

Reading : Verses from Hebrews, Chapter 2

High priest

Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, Jesus himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.

(Lectionary, New Revised Standard Version)

Thoughts

Jesus was the 'faithful high priest' Hebrews says. Historically from the time of Aaron the high priest was a hereditary post. He was there to serve as an intermediary between God his his people. He wore unique vestments and had unique responsibilities, for instance on the Day of Atonement. He also presided over the ruling council, the Sanhedrin which met in Jerusalem. This situation continued up until the time of Jesus, although after that Herod and later the Romans began appointing the high priest. Jesus is to be a 'merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God'. Later high priests were anything but faithful, and Caiaphas was to sentence Jesus to death by declaring his words blasphemous.

The high priest wore a breastplate with stones engraved with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel on them on his breast and shoulders - he therefore carried them close to his heart. The theologian Barclay points out that a priest is a 'bridge builder', who wants to build a bridge between man and God. As a man and as the Son of God Jesus was the perfect choice to create this bridge and make reparation for our sin.

Today's priests also attempt to be bridge-builders (despite our frailties) and to bear their people on their heart. A little myth says that when they die their coffin should be brought into church head first in order that they can greet their congregation when they get to heaven!

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ,
our great High Priest,
we pray for all priests and ministers
that they may faithfully
serve Your Church
throughout their life.
May they carry out their tasks
with integrity and honour,
and seek always to act
as bridge-builders
between God and the people
they serve.
Amen.
