Jesus Anger Matthew 5 Love Reconciliation

Reading : Verses from Matthew, Chapter 5

Anger

For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

‘You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, “You shall not murder”; and “whoever murders shall be liable to judgement.” But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgement; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, “You fool”, you will be liable to the hell of fire. So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

(Lectionary, New Revised Standard Version)

Thoughts

Today many people allow their emotions to surface in a way which is most unpleasant. We see it at football matches, at political rallies, and even in hospitals where people are forced to wait a long while to see a Doctor or Nurse. Too many of us seem to feel that we have the right to say offensive things and express anger when we don't get our own way. I have also seen this happen within our churches over the ordination of women to the priesthood in the 90s and in recent years over issues concerning same-sex relationships. It is often characterised by angry expressions and words, and with those concerned thinking that their cause is right - that is, what God wants.

It was no different 2,000 years ago. The Pharisees in their anger against Jesus believed they were doing God's work. But God's Kingdom is a Kingdom of love, and we should measure all our decisions, arguments, and thoughts against that rule. For Jesus says quite plainly if we have anger in our heart God will judge us. If our faces and our words show evidence of our anger, how black must our souls be, and how quickly do we need to ask God's forgiveness and become reconciled to our opponent.

Peace starts with one person asking themselves "Is this what God wants - can I measure my arguments, against Love?" And then doing something about it!

Prayer

God of Love,
who sent Your Son to live
and die for us,
to save us from our sin
and offer us eternal life,
may we be worthy of that sacrifice.
Help us eradicate all hatred
from our minds;
to see those from whom we differ
as part of Your creation;
and to seek reconciliation.
Amen.
