Thoughts for the Day

Thursday, 2nd November 2023: All Soul's Day 2023

Death Jesus All Souls Soul Luke 13

Reading : Verses from Luke, Chapter 13

Cross

That very hour some Pharisees came and said to Jesus, ‘Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.’ He said to them, ‘Go and tell that fox for me, “Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed away from Jerusalem.” Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.”’

(Lectionary, New Revised Standard Version)

Thoughts

In our reading from Luke's Gospel we see some Pharisees warning Jesus to leave the area. This little incident is only in Luke's Gospel, and shows us that not all the Pharisees are against his ministry. It also highlights the fact that Jesus already knows that he is going to his death.

Today is 'All Soul's Day', when the Church remembers those who have died. It gives us a chance especially to remember those who have died, and many churches hold services around this time of the year to allow local families to remember loved ones and to celebrate their lives. It is a time to thank God for the lives of those who have died, and to remember all the reasons why we miss them - to recall all their good qualities and bring special memories to mind. At the same time we need to put aside any issues of guilt or anger.

All this helps with the grieving process, and though it can be sad, it's often cathartic and helpful to know that the souls of our loved ones are held safe in the hands of God.

Take time today to think back over your life to those special ones who influenced you, making you the person you are today, and thank God for them.

Prayer

A collect for All Souls Day:

Eternal God, our maker and redeemer,
grant us, with all the faithful departed,
the sure benefits of your Son’s saving passion
and glorious resurrection that, in the last day,
when you gather up all things in Christ,
we may with them enjoy the fullness of your promises;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
