O Lord, who may abide in your tent?
Who may dwell on your holy hill?
Those who walk blamelessly,
and do what is right,
and speak the truth from their heart;
Who do not slander with their tongues,
and do no evil to their friends,
nor take up a reproach against their
neighbours;
In whose eyes the wicked are despised,
but who honour those who fear the Lord;
who stand by their oath even to their hurt;
Those who do these things shall never
be moved.
(New Revised Standard Version)
In ancient Israel it was the custom to give a visitor food and shelter, and to protect them from anything that would harm them. However, for those of us not living in tents, we need to see this Psalm as a picture image of the question "Who will give us shelter, or asylum when we need it?"
Psalm 15 is attributed to David, and he seems not be asking to live in God's house which was then at Gibeon and could only be inhabited by priests, instead he wants to know who can live in God's presence - a question which we too might ask.
The answer is, those who live in faith, and whose faith can be seen in their actions and life-style. Those who live in this way will live forever in God's presence.
Heavenly Father.
we ask You to help us
to walk in faith all our life;
to listen to Your words;
to obey Your commands;
and to change our lifestyle
to live a holy life.
Amen.
