Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
make melody to our God on the lyre....
His delight is not in the strength of the horse,
nor his pleasure in the speed of a runner;
but the Lord take pleasure in those who fear him,
in those who hope in his steadfast love.
(Church in Wales Lectionary, New Revised Standard Version)
Often we consider God from a selfish point of view: we need His help, and we expect Him just to give us what we want! But the Psalmist looks at what God wants. In his world the man who could breed the best war horse is likely to live longest, and those who are fit and can run fast will probably also do well. Both will be feted by their peers, in the same way that we make much of sportsmen and women today.
But ultimately these are not standards that concern God. We may be superb at our job or the greatest sports person but neither of these are important. God take pleasure in those who invite Him into their lives, who seek to obey his command to love Him and all people, and who hope in His plans for our future.
We need to take time to think about our priorities!
Heavenly Father,
help us to look again at our life,
to see what is important
and what is not;
to remind ourselves
of Your priorities;
and to enable us to
make changes to our
way of life.
Amen.
