Thoughts for the Day

Friday, 29th January 2021: We may stumble, but we don't fall

Psalm God our Father Trust Psalm 37

Reading : Verses from Psalm 37

Boy on bike

Trust in the Lord, and do good;
so you will live in the land, and enjoy security.
Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him, and he will act.....

Our steps are made firm by the Lord,
when he delights in our way;
though we stumble, we shall not fall headlong,
for the Lord holds us by the hand.

(Church in Wales Lectionary, New Revised Standard Version)

Thoughts

When one of our sons was small we bought him a bicycle and applied trainer wheels, so that he could speed away almost immediately. Other than having to watch him as he sometimes forgot to check for pedestrians or cars, all was well. However, one day I realised that the bike was listing over to one side to an enormous degree. The trainer wheels had become completely bent and were doing nothing to keep him upright. So we removed them.

Suddenly he lost his confidence, not believing he could ride the bike without them, and would only ride it if we held the back of the saddle. If we let go he would immediately stop. Luckily this didn't last too long, but the point is he really only trusted us to keep him safe.

Our reading today reminds us that just as we looked after our son on his bike, although we may stumble, God will not allow us to fall headlong when we trust in Him, to keep us safe.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
we thank You for Your
love and care for us.
We also thank you for all who love us,
and all who work to keep us safe
at this time of the pandemic.
When we are tired, stressed, or sick,
help us to put all our trust in You.
Amen.

Follow Up Thoughts

Since my example today was about my young son learning to ride his bicycle, I thought I would give you a video to watch on the subject of trusting God, that is aimed at children! It's rather good though:
