Thoughts for the Day

Baal Hosea 2 Pagan Israel Prophet Hosea

Reading : Verses from Hosea, Chapter 2

Hosea

Israel’s Infidelity, Punishment, and Redemption

Therefore, I will now persuade her,
and bring her into the wilderness,
and speak tenderly to her.
From there I will give her her vineyards,
and make the Valley of Achor a door of hope.
There she shall respond as in the days of her youth,
as at the time when she came out of the land of Egypt.

On that day, says the Lord, you will call me, ‘My husband’, and no longer will you call me, ‘My Baal’...... And I will take you for my wife for ever; I will take you for my wife in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love, and in mercy. I will take you for my wife in faithfulness; and you shall know the Lord.

(Lectionary, New Revised Standard Version)

Thoughts

This week we're going to dip into prophecies by Hosea, a prophet who lived after the split of the Kingdom, that left Israel in the north and Judah in the south. Hosea lived in the north but was a contemporary of Isaiah, in the south,. He prophesied in the 8th century BCE for 40 years. This era was marked by political instability, moral decay, and idolatry, leading to the eventual fall of Samaria to the Assyrians in 722 BCE. Hosea, whose name means “salvation” or “deliverance” writes of God's enduring commitment to His people. He calls for repentance, warning of impending judgment while promising restoration and hope for those who return to the Lord.

His work is characterised by much symbolism, and vivid imagery - his life and marriage to Gomer becoming a living parable of the relationship God has with His people. Hosea's love for his wife despite her faithlessness is a beautiful picture of God's love for His people despite their worship of the pagan god, Baal. The passage from Chapter 2 above sees God as a husband talking to His people as to a wayward wife. He warns them of difficulties ahead (the "wilderness") but there is hope for the future (the "vineyards") if they are reunited to Him and leave their sins behind.

Today in this period of Pentecost when we remember the work of the Holy Spirit among Christians in the early Church (as well as now) Hosea's visions should speak to us. With the coming of Jesus there was to be hope for unity with God because of the latter's initiative. It was, and still is, destroyed by sin, but it has survived because of God's loyalty to His original plan which was begun with His love for us and His longing for us to return to Him.

Prayer

Eternal Father,
who saw Your people lose their way -
to follow pagan gods
and ignore Your commands -
yet You did not abandon them,
so may we remain faithful to You
and to Your Son, our Lord.
Forgive us when we stray,
and guide us back to Your loving arms,
this day we pray.
Amen.
