Praise the Lord, all you nations!
Extol him, all you peoples!
For great is his steadfast love towards us,
and the faithfulness of the Lord endures for ever.
Praise the Lord!
(New Revised Standard Version)
If you've watched 'The Big Build' you will notice at the point of 'the reveal', at least one of those present puts their hand over their mouth and says "Oh God!" This is a cry of amazement, happiness and of thanks, and even if the person has no intention of thanking God, they are thanking the people who have done the work. But we also hear complaints using the name of God. 'Why doesn't God stop this pandemic?' As if God was responsible for the spread!
I have long realised that there is a glimmer of hope in such statements. After all why mention God if you don't believe in Him?
Today we have the whole of a tiny psalm! It's very short. Perhaps we could learn the words, and when we feel alone or lost we could say it aloud for ourselves, but also as a prayer to encourage others who have some fleeting hope in God.
Heavenly Father,
all too often we use Your name
without much thought,
or we blame You
for the things of our own creation.
Teach us to praise You
and to thank You -
and that Your name might be
used responsibly by all.
Amen.
