I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name for ever and ever.
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
his greatness is unsearchable.
One generation shall laud your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
On the glorious splendour of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.....
They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom,
and tell of your power.
to make known to all people your mighty deeds,
and the glorious splendour of your kingdom.
(New Revised Standard Version)
Most parents and grandparents are accustomed to praising their offspring and grandchildren as they grow and learn new skills. We are proud of their achievements, and by praising them we add much to their self-esteem and their sense of worth. It's something we often do instinctively, know that criticism will do the opposite.
We don't need to praise God for these reasons, but nevertheless we need to praise Him for all He does for us and for our world, and for you in particular. You might like to think of everything for a moment or two - to meditate in fact - and join the psalmist at the end in saying "My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and all flesh will bless his holy name for ever and ever."
Heavenly Father,
Lord of all the universe,
of dominions unknown to us,
we praise Your holy name.
We thank You for the beauty
and wonder of our world,
for the diversity of its peoples,
and the glory of Your Kingdom,
made known through Your Son,
our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Amen
