I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, for ever;
with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations.
I declare that your steadfast love is established for ever;
your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.
(Church in Wales Lectionary, New Revised Standard Version)
This time of the year many of us make New Year promises. You know the kind of thing: "I will go on a diet and lose X amount of weight," or "I will take up running....or walking.....or cycling," or perhaps "I will start saving money". If we're lucky we manage to keep it up for a couple of weeks until we settle into the new year and our ordinary life takes over.
Sometimes we do the same with our promises to God. The writer of Psalm 89 starts his song with a promise that he will remember God's love for him for ever, that he will declare to the world God's faithfulness, and that His promises are true. At the time he means his words, but how long will he remember them? We too make promises to God, that we will read our bible, or say our prayers, or go to church. But how long do we keep them up?
This year take a small step. Thank God for all that He does for you, and remember to turn to Him in whatever way you can, as often as you can. Don't beat yourself up when you forget. Instead say sorry, and start again......and again, if necessary!
Heavenly Father,
You know our weaknesses,
and You know our frailties.
We ask Your forgiveness this day -
for the times we do not turn to You,
and for the times we forget You.
Help us to change
and to start again
when we fail to turn to You.
Amen.
