Thoughts for the Day

Wednesday, 19th August 2020: How sweet are your words to my taste

God Law Psalm 119

Reading : Verses from Psalm 119

Honey on spoon

Oh how I love your law!
It is my meditation all day long...

I hold back my feet from every evil way,
in order to keep your word.
I do not turn away from your ordinances,
for you have taught me.

How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Through your precepts I get understanding:
therefore I hate every false way.

(New Revised Standard Version)

Thoughts

"As sweet as......?" Well you'd probably put "honey" to complete the saying, or if you like specific sweet things you could say "chocolate", or "jam", or........? Well I leave it to you. I just doubt very much if you'd say "As sweet as your words".

But here we are back at that psalm again - Psalm 119 the longest psalm in the bible, and the one that describes the written word of God in more ways than you would think possible: 'commandments', 'law', 'word', 'ordinances', 'precepts' and 'decrees' among them.

The Psalmist says he finds God's words even sweeter than honey. Today we don't know our scriptures in the way that our forebears did, nevertheless we all have our favourite sections, that might be called 'sweet'. What's your favourite part of the bible?

  • Psalm 23 'The Lord's my shepherd'?
  • John Chapter 1: 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God'?
  • The Christmas nativity story?
  • Matthew Chapter 11.28: 'Come unto me all that are heavy laden and I will give you rest?'
  • Or........................................?

Prayer

Lord God,
help us to remember the stories
in our Bibles -
stories of real people
who worshipped You -
and words given to us
through Your Son our Saviour
Jesus Christ.
Ignite in us a desire
to learn more about You.
Amen
