Jesus said, 'What is the Kingdom of God like? And to what should I compare it? It is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in the garden, it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches.'
And again he said, 'To what should I compare the kingdom of God? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.'
(New Revised Standard Version)
Christians can say that "Where there is love, there is evidence of God", and the most amazing thing is that, like the yeast or the seed in our bible reading, love grows more love. During this pandemic we have seen some really good things happening from ordinary people. At first neighbours started sharing things and shopping for each other I noticed, and it's now gone on to include giving food to help strangers.
Here it started with a member of the church worrying that they had stopped collecting items for the local food bank, because the pandemic had closed the church collection point. So the village pubs were asked to help, and the first lot of food came in to their boxes. However, a few days later the pubs were in lockdown! But it didn't stop there, for these wonderful people spread the word around the village to ensure the food would still come in!
When we show love for our neighbour it encourages more love to grow, and even though we hear of many evil things happening in our world, good will always win - with God's help.
Heavenly Father,
we thank you for the small kindnesses
we see around us,
and, the simple ways that many people
show their love for others.
Help us to follow their example,
and spread God's Kingdom of Love.
Amen.
