Let us love one another, because love is from God, everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God's love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another.
(Church in Wales lectionary, New Revised Standard version)
We've all heard of the 'Gold Standard' I guess, its a monetary system where a country's currency or paper money has a value directly linked to gold. The country sets a fixed price of what pounds or dollars equals what gold. The system is not used much now, but nevertheless we sometimes use the phrase to mean something that has a fixed base line.
We can think of God and love in the same way. John, in his letter says that 'God is love'. Where we find love we therefore find some element of God, because ultimately God's base line is love!
Today, you might like to think of people and situations, perhaps in the news. Which stories, no matter how difficult they are, have some element of love in them, and which do not? Even in the worst situation where there is love, then there is God! You might also like to think about yourself during the day. Which of your thoughts, words and actions this day have shown love?
Heavenly Father,
You teach us through Your Son
and through Your apostles,
that You are love,
and that love is the most important quality
we should possess.
Teach us how to truly love
one another,
and forgive us when forget
to show love to You or to others.
Amen.
