Giving till it hurts, with a smile.

On 3rd February 1994 Mother Teresa in an address to a National Prayer Breakfast in Washington DC, spoke of giving (whether that was money or some act of service) until it hurts. We should feel that we have sacrificed something, but nevertheless we should give it joyfully. She pointed out that "God loves a cheerful giver". If we look up the word "cheerful" in its original Greek we find that it means "hilarious". So God, she argued, wants us to give joyously!

We should note that we are not seeking to hurt ourselves, to feel pain, for instance, but if we help others we will be helped in return - we shall reap what we sow. The widow gave all that she had cheerfully. For us that might mean doing something for others until it hurts, or it could mean giving financially until it hurts. You might look up the following: 2 Corinthians chapter 9, verses 6-12 where Paul is asking the people of Corinth to help give to Christians in Jerusalem who are in need.
