What is spiritual pride?

Spiritual pride is one of the most insidious of sins, it can creep up on us, and perhaps we never notice it. Here are some examples:

  1. Finding faults with others. This shows that you feel you are better than those with whom you find fault!
  2. Being too 'hungry' for others to notice or respect us, and the need to be needed. All these things mean we are too concerned with what others, and not God, thinks.
  3. Preferring some people over others. Do we aim to be noticed by certain people but ignore those we deem less worthy?

The good thing is that when we begin to notice these faults in ourselves, we are on the road to recovery, through confession and absolution.

As Psalm 139 says:

'Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my thoughts.
See if there is any wicked way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.'
