Learning more about Psalm 119

Psalm 119 is written as an acrostic*. There are 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet, and the whole of psalm 119 contains 22 units of 8 verses in each. Every section has a letter of the Hebrew alphabet and every line in it begins with that letter.

We have seen already how language is used, but it is worth noting that in almost every single verse of this Psalm the word of God is mentioned. Overall there are eight words used to refer to the Scriptures. These are:

Law
Word
Judgements
Testimonies
Commandments
Statutes
Precepts
Word (a different meaning to the first "Word" above)

Have a look at other verses on the same theme in this psalm:

  1. Verses 1-3.
  2. Verses 33-35.
  3. Verses 169-176.

*An acrostic means a poem in which the first letter of each line spells out a word, message or the alphabet.
